An Angel’s Death

"Siasiam"~ Lealyan Thawmte

It could have been any other ordinary cold November day at the orphanage. Despite lack of facilities or infrastructures, the hundred and plus children who now made Angel’s Place-an orphanage located about 3 kilometers to the
west of Lamka, at Bungmual – their home, would in all likelihood be going about their daily routines. Unlike other children living in the warmth and comforts of their homes or even children at another orphanages, these particular children have nothing to look forward to for the coming holidays. It is sad, but for them, it may too well be normal. For that is the only life they’d known. Angel’s Place do not celebrate Christmas or New Year holidays or any other Christian holidays for that matter.

But for one particular boy – that day, the 25th November of 2009 turned out to be his worst nightmare come true. Lianlemsiam @ Siasiam, a 15-year old, active and fun loving, mischievous as he was, had made the unpardonable mistake of daring to mimick the actions of one of the wardens. The supposedly care giver, the warden turned into a Devil and vent his fury and anger on the poor boy. The physical assault and abuse unleashed upon a helpless 15-year old boy by a full grown adult, justified as a punishment was nothing short of a third degree torture as it later turned out. The profoundly injured Siasiam was admitted to Lamka District Hospital after 3 days at 9 pm, on the 28th November, 2009 with a ‘multiple bruise injury over the back, back of both LL, injury/blow, swollen hands’ and a recommendation for 5 units of BT (blood transfusion) as soon as possible – apparently due to internal bleeding as a result of the brutal torture he had suffered at the hands of the warden. Though there were no witnesses to come forward, the boy was known to have said that the warden stomped over his back, buttocks, and kicked him mercilessly and in fact, later, as he laid dying, he would not even dare tell his mother the whole ordeal he had endured that fateful day. One can only imagine a full grown adult stomping with fury and anger – his full weight and force on a puny fifteen year old.

The condition of Siasiam, according to the entry for the Nurse’s Daily Record of the 29th November reads – “Alleged assault resulting in bleeding per anus and back”. While according to the Admission Record, the provisional diagnosis was also entered as – “Anemia following alleged assault”. And here is one of the many smoking guns of this tragic story which have come to surface. The Discharge Certificate bears an additional entry in bold hand written letters “Discharged on request,” while the box against LAMA- Leave Against Medical Advice – in the discharge column was ticked. Who made that request, that decision? It is very unlikely that a profusely bleeding boy of 15, with constant internal bleeding and multiple bruises on his back would leave the hospital of his own free will.

What transpired between his leaving the Hospital at Lamka, against medical advice and the 29th of December 2009, where he again was re-admitted to RIMS, Imphal, is a matter of conjecture. Of who said what or not. Of who possibly covered up the heinous crime to save face. According to various reports, Angel’s Place claimed that Siasiam was fine. Even playing football. The Angel’s Place were defensive and on damage control mode. What is also known was that the Angel’s Place authorities had tried to downplay the entire incident when Siasiam’s brother-in-law visited the orphanage and verbally complained about the severity of the punishment. They even ward off inquisitive media and even threatened some of them. Probably they succeeded. For nothing was mentioned in the local dailies. So before we look at the final days of Siasiam, let us look at Angel’s Place.

Angel’s Place, an orphanage is run under a Chairman: R. Sanga, a preacher for several congregations, Executive Director for the Imphal School of Preaching, a banker and a community leader, a Manager: L. Ruata, who himself lives with his family in the premise, and a Superintendent: V Englian, with another 6 workers. The workers’ areas of responsibilities are not defined, but they could well be the wardens and the cooks, etc., even while their website stated the number of paid staffs at Angel’s Place as 18, including 2 part time staff.

The orphanage is supported and funded by the James Connection, a non-profit corporation founded in 2002-03 by Jan C. Swensen, a lawyer at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, US. It was so named after a verse from the Bible under James, Chapter 1:27 – “…religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…” Furthermore, the James Connection is supervised by a board of directors, and the James Connection Trust, which is supervised by five trustees of which the president is, again, Jan C. Swensen. The remaining trustees are Jerris Bullard, a missionary from Manassas, VA and three church leaders from India. The church leaders names were not mentioned.

Angel’s Place, which costs over 200,000 US Dollars was opened on February 7, 2005, initially housing 60 children with R. Sanga as the director of operations for the James Connection in India, namely at Bungmual, Lamka. The James Connection, according to their website is constantly in touch with Angel’s Place at Lamka via phone or e-mails. It is overseen by the Holiday Park Church of Christ, 1510 Abers Creek Road, Pittsburgh, PA, which explains why the children are not allowed to celebrate any Christian Holidays, even though it claims to be a non-denominational organization, according to their promotional video clip. The Angel’s Place annual operating cost is over 153,000 US Dollars which is roughly around 65 – 70 lakhs in Indian Rupees, depending on the rate of exchange, and increasing.

Let us now return to the final days of Siasiam. After leaving the Hospital at Lamka against medical advice on the 29th November, 2009, he was again re-admitted, this time to RIMS at Imphal on the 29th December. Details of referrals made by who or when are a bit sketchy, but patients with serious and life-threatening conditions from all across the state are usually referred to RIMS. That much is a known fact. His provisional diagnosis on being admitted to the RIMS was ‘severe anemia’. Anemia, for the layman means lack of blood, for example due to excessive internal bleeding. The attending Doctor on the 30th December recommended venesection, which is a surgical incision into a vein for early blood transfusion and other injections due to ‘severe anemia with shock’. No significant history suggestive of tuberculosis or bronchitis were found with regards to his sudden shortness of breath.

Whether that recommendation was acted upon is not known, but the Nurses Daily Record for the 30th December 2009 at RIMS noted the worsening condition of the patient. And by 3:15 am, the 31st, Siasiam was pronounced death. The Medical Certificate for cause of death, concluded it as “pulmonary oedema..” – which again is fluid accumulation in the lungs leading to impaired gas exchange and causing respiratory failure. It is also due to either failure of the heart to remove fluid from the lung circulation, or a direct injury to the lung- “..and aneamia”. (Recall the warden, a full grown adult stomping his full weight and force over the small built Siasiam – lungs can collapse). And not surprisingly enough, the manner of death was attributed to natural cause. No autopsy was done to determine the real cause of death or the cause leading to his death.

According to reliable sources, soon after the demise of Siasiam, instead of even contacting the local YPA (Young Paite Association), which is almost a norm at Imphal in cases of deaths for the Paites out of town, the Angel’s Place purchased a coffin from the market and rushed the dead body to Singngat, the native town of Siasiam, son of Late Tunzalian Samte, and Chingkhovung, an illiterate mother. And even though there was no mention of leukemia, or popularly known as blood cancer, in the death certificate issued by the RIMS, the Angel’s Place was quick to exploit the family’s naivety at the funeral by claiming that he died of blood cancer and not because of the horrendous torture he had suffered at the hands of a warden a month ago. Which, interestingly enough was backed up by one local and very prominent doctor.

Questions still remain. Was it blood cancer that led to the demise of Siasiam? How did Angel’s Place and a particular Doctor come up with that diagnosis? Was his blood tested to confirm that indeed he had leukemia? Still, according to many who knew Siasiam, he was active, playful, energetic and lively. Restless as any teenager ought to be. Whereas, the symptoms of a blood cancer patient are: swollen lymph nodes, fevers and night sweatings, infections, weak and tiredness, bleeding – not from the anus – but from gums, purplish patches on skin and red spots, swollen spleen and liver, weight loss, pains in the joints. That does not fit the profile of Siasiam at all. No. Besides, according to a website on Angel’s Place, Doctors and even Dentists regularly checked the children on a weekly basis. If so, why was not Siasiam’s condition, if indeed, he had blood cancer – detected?

Now, here’s my personal thought, and very disturbing at that. And that I just cannot stop wondering and asking myself. Why were the local media, like the Manipur Express, or The Lamka Post silent on this issue? What were they doing? Is the not-so-mysterious death of an orphan just another death for the obituary column? Why is not anyone asking questions? Just because he is an orphan, he has no one to speak for him? Because the family he had are poor, illiterate and barely surviving? Do they not even have the conscience and guts to represent people with no voices? Is that what journalism is about? Kiss the politicians’ and VIPs’ and so-called influential leader’s asses? I don’t think so. On second thought… I understand. No one really seems to care about journalism and the responsibilities that comes with it. It appears that money, power and connections are more attractive or even lucrative than the truth.

And to the so called social organizations we have, say – like the Zomi Human Rights Foundation (ZHRF). Hello? Do you even know what is happening? Is Siasiam not a human, with no rights at all just because he is an orphan? Or are you guys more into something more, say.. Zogam-ish? Something bigger like… why did someone (with no disrespect) manage to get himself killed in a truck accident at an event organized by a popular organisation? Someone even called him a martyr. It’s tragic and sad, and my heart goes out to his family. But martyrs do not die by or of accidents. And finally to the Zomi Mothers’ Association (ZMA). Mothers, if Siasiam were your son? What would you do? I know.. you would shout foul and raise havoc, because you have that platform. Siasiam did not, nor his poor illiterate mother. Ask yourselves, dear mothers. Dig into that motherly conscience of yours.

While I do not mean to entirely blame or point fingers at any particular organisation, or throw Angel’s Place under the bus. I think people who take it into their hearts to run orphanages are doing a great job, and I hope they continue to do so. The only thing missing and needed here, I believe is accountability. I know this is not the first time that a death occurred, not only at orphanages, but also at the many de-addiction centers in and around Lamka. I’d heard about a boy at Angel’s Place, whose foot was gangrened and that he was sent back to his home somewhere near Moirang. To die a slow death. I know about the death, a couple of years ago of a 17 year old. I, however, do not know the entire story or details. But I know it can happen, and it does happen. And I understand the difficulties they faced. Meagre pay, hours and hours of work and devotion. And I appreciate the time and efforts they sacrifice.

But, what I do not appreciate; will and cannot tolerate and accept is when the powers and wealth that be trampled upon the poor and the have nots. And trying to buy themselves out of a mess with a paltry Rs.3000 in this case. I say ‘buy themselves out’ because it still is unclear as to whether the amount paid was in the form of ‘condolence’ or as a gesture of ‘compensation’. For a life. A son. And his dreams, now extinguished. A mother’s pride. A sibling’s hope. For if it were a condolence, Angel’s Place would have given the Rs.3000 at the reception of the funeral, as is practiced in our society. But instead, the money was handed over to Siasiam’s mother in full public view at a speech by Englian, the Superintendent at Angel’s Place, a speech in which he stressed the strict and rigid rules and the severity of punishments meted out to children at the orphanage.

Which sounded like a bleak admission of guilt, and somewhat contrasted with the Angel’s Place’s vehement claim that Siasiam’s death was due to blood cancer; and not because of the extreme punishment he was subjected to. That is hard to understand and believe. More so, harder to condone and which led more and more to believe that Siasiam did not die of blood cancer. He died due to the torture, so called punishment, inflicted upon mercilessly by someone who was supposed to look after him, teach, care and guide him. And someone should have to answer for that. Someone, if he or she has the courage to be the person he/she claims to be – to be brave enough to stand up and say what is needed to be said – and what needs to be done. To right a wrong.

The Curious Case of the Death of Siasiam

- Lunte Samte

A young boy of barely 15, Siasiam, suffered internal bleeding, apart from others, after being given corporal punishment by the warden at Angel’s Place on November 25, 2009.He was admitted to the Lamka District Hospital after three days. After three damn days. The hospital admission’s records on November 28, 2009 (9:05, pm precisely) note the patient as having “multiple bruise injury over the back, back of both LL (I don’t know what LL means)… injury/blow … swollen hands.” Provisional diagnosis is listed as “anemia following assault.” Haemoglobin was only 4.8 and 5 units of blood transfusion was recommended ASAP.

Soon, rumors began to spread and eventually reached the media. Reporters visited the boy at the hospital, took some pictures and wrote detailed reports about the incident. And yet somehow these reports never found their way into the newspapers. The manager of Angel’s Place, Ruata created a scene at the hospital as well as at the newsrooms of various local papers and cable operators, telling them not to write or broadcast anything related to the incident. He even threatened them. Which is why the incident was never reported in the local papers, except for The Sangai Express.

Apparently, Lamka media remained virtually silent on this. And even family members were in the dark.

Somehow Siasiam’s aunt got the news that their boy was admitted to the hospital following a severe thrashing and torture, and after staying there for a couple of nights, he was brought back to the home even as doctors at the hospital referred him to be treated at Imphal. She went to the home and confronted Ruata. As she was led into the room, she was shocked to see a pale delicate-looking Siasiam who was always playful and energetic, lying with urinary catheter dangling down beside the bed. She asked, “What had our boy done? What did he do to bear this?” Ruata said, “Let us not talk about what had been done. Instead, let us talk about how we should go about dealing with difficult children.”

When Siasiam’s mother visited him, she asked, “Bawi, what happened? What did they do to you?” Siasiam could not respond. He was intimidated by the presence of staffs around. He simply said, “He nu, I will tell you when I recover.”

Thereafter, family members and relatives were not allowed to visit Siasiam anymore. Wardens at the home told them that he was okay and that they did not need to worry about him. On one occasion, they said, “You can’t meet him right now, he’s busy playing football with his friends.” Poor family members believed them and went back home, thinking that their boy was fine. They didn’t hear anything back from the home.

Until December 29, 2009 when he was admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Imphal. Records from the hospital state the provisional diagnosis as severe anemia. Unlike the previous hospital stay, Siasiam could be with her mother this time and I guess this would mean so much to him. Venesection was done the next day as doctors failed to insert IV cannula. But his condition progressively worsened.

At 3:35 am December 31, 2009 he passed away in the loving arms of his mother. To be with the angels in heaven. The real Angels’ place. Where there are no tears, no pain, no torture, no death. Only joy and peace and love.

The body was buried in Singngat the same day without an autopsy being performed. The home made a non-examining physician write a death certificate stating that the cause of death was blood cancer and that this had nothing to with corporal punishment. Note that according to the RIMS’ Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, the immediate cause of death was pulmonary oedema and antecedent cause as anemia. No where in the record is there any indication of blood cancer.

The home gave Rs. 3000 as compensation to the mother.

Emotions betray the poor mother. She still cries today, not tears of grief, but because the death of her son makes her feel so bad and guilty that she had done nothing to save her loving son and that she was not able to be with him when he needed her most. Her son didn’t get to tell her what really happened on the 25th November, 2009 at Angel’s Place. Yet.

Torture charges against warden

Source: The Sangai Express / S Singlianmang Guite

Lamka, December 02 2009: A 15-year-old inmate of Angel’s Place, a children home was admitted in the District Hospital due to internal injuries sustained in the course of punishment by his warden. The boy identified by his attendants as Lianlalsiam s/o Chinkhovung of Singngat village was admitted at around 8.30 pm on Saturday at the Medicine ward of the hospital but following discovery of his nature of injury, doctors referred him to the Surgical ward of the same hospital, source said. When contacted the children home authorities said, corporal punishment was never a part of their policy, but the indecent conduct of the boy concerned when the warden caught him red-handed supposedly influenced him (warden) to act beyond their policy. Nevertheless the warden had apologised to the home authorities and promised not to let his emotions coerce his duty, added the source. The boy allegedly was mimicking his warden and disturbing his colleagues who were in the midst of their exam when he was caught red-handed by the warden. He had also been served at least eight warnings before the incident on Saturday, the source alleged. Five units of blood, including three today has been given to the boy which home authorities claimed was doing very well at the hospital. However, doctors attending to the boy referred him to better equipped hospital in Imphal today as bleeding in his anal showed no signs of improvement even after four days of admission to the hospital. Attempts to collect the version of the boy proved futile as he refuses to response queries made by the media.
